STEREO TO 5.1
Anyone has any idea how I can convert stereo sound to 5.1 sound without using a decoder?
I have a 5.1 speaker system (Philips) hooked up to my TV box(I'm using that to watch TV through my LCD monitor). I'm using just the 3 satellites and
the sub now, as I can't use the 2 surround satelites. To channel the sound to the 3.1, I'm using a two-way audio splitter.
Any ideas?

Wild guess...
I don't think you can properly play/hear any 5.1 sound without a decoder. Or an A/V receiver that has 5.1 capabilities. Also, before making any more
assumptions, what is your source?

You're right, it's not the correct audio sequence that's being channeled. But it is closer to the real thing. My current 3.1 set-up is working
fine. The subwoofer is doing a great job banging in the bass. I've read somewhere that Altec Lansing is, or was, selling converters. The thing is,
it's not really that effective, as well.
To answer your question, my source is the TV box, because everything goes through it. My coax signal is plugged into it, as well as my DVD player via
RCA cables. I can always use the 5.1 sa DVD player, but I have to re-arrange the wiring when I switch between TV and DVD. I have no plans, immediate
or otherwise, to buy a decoder. It's too dang expensive!
It's taking a while to re-build my desktop. That's the only answer to my problem, when I plug my system through SPDIF.
Oh well....
