I just hope it doesn't happen to my unit. I love my Vision M!

Other options?

I read your blog, re your Zen vision M. I just like to ask what your other options were. Did you consider other Zen variants?

I'm using a Zen vision, it's the predecessor of the Vision W. So you view the movies/photos via a 3.5 inch screen. It looks very good, especially with today's widescreen movies & TV episodes. You can use it in your car, as well. You just need to channel the audio through the head unit to get the whole feel. It also has a built-in speaker, so you can listen to music or watch videos without the earphones. The speaker is quite weak, though. I use it to watch my downloaded videos on the TV, too. You just hook up your RCA cables to the TV, and viola! My mom stayed up for five hours watching Prison Break season 3.

I'm thinking of getting either a Vision W or an Archos for my next upgrade.

iPOD? It's not the gadget for me. But I may be buying one for my girl.

BTW, in your blog you said that you didn't like the iPOD because you can't use it as a flash disk. You can. I've tried it on Win XP and Vista, and it recognizes the iPOD as another disk drive. You still need iTunes, though, to update your library.

Rasta: Not really considered other Zen variants cause I found the other either lacking in storage space or features. Closest to come into consideration was probably the Zen Vision:W. I considered the Archos, iPod (not really), and Sony Walkman Video.

I see you have a have a Zen Vision... Question though, did your unit come with a A/V out cable? The one with the three rca-headphone type jack? Mine didn't and it sucks that I have to buy the 1.5k worth cable just to hook it up. Are these jacks available somewhere else? Un-branded ones?

About the iPod flash disk thing. Yup I think I came across a downloadable program where you can use your iPod as an external drive. So wait, when you hook up the iPod for the first time on a PC (w/o installing Apple software), the computer installs drivers for it? I think I was referring to not being able to use other video formats/music formats in the unit (copy/paste). I don't like to go through iTunes also...

I bought my Zen 2nd hand from ebay. Got it for 10k. The seller had it sent from the US, and it didn't come with anything but the unit, the charger, and the USB to min USB cable. Pwede na din, since it's all I'de ever need. The good thing with this device is that almost all the cables are generic. You can buy a standard data cable for just a little over a hundred bucks. You can also get an AV cable for about the same price. Check out any ACE hardware or DIY shop. Look for a baby jack to 3 RCA cable. In some stores, you can even try it out, before you but it. It'll work fine. Mine did, although I didn't buy it. I used the cable that came along with my Handycam.

On the flash drive, you're right. I thought you were referring to using an iPod as a portable drive. Your PC can detect the iPod as a drive, but you will need iTunes to upload your media stuff. Zen is really much, much easier to use. Plus, you don't need to do a lot of file conversions.

The granddaddy is the Archos. There's even a new Archos with WiFi

Mark, on the AV cable:
You can use the ones that can be bought at any DIY shop. Just don't jack it in the whole way. Pull it up one click. Apparently, Creative did a few tweaks with the cables, for users to be forced to cough up a few bucks more for a proprietary cable. There's a work-around to it, though. You can google it. Using the generic AV cable gives you mono sound, as I've come to know through the net. Fortunately, my Zen has two separate jacks for the headphones and the AV out. So I can plug-in the video through the RCA, then channel the audio through the headphone jack. Sweet!

Another thing that you can "mod": hardware upgrade. Physically change the hard drive on your Zen. Creative uses standard 2.5" laptop hard drives on the Zen vision series, so you can change the HD to a higher spec if you want. Laptop HDs are a bit too high, though. So I'm sticking to my 30GB at the moment. Google it!

Here's the thread for the AV cable mod. You can try to interchange the yellow and red cables first. If it doesn't work, you'll need to do a few splices.

Good luck!

Naloko na. I destroyed my Zen Vision's LCD.:sniffle: I didn't notice it, as it was in my pocket the whole time. It must have happened as I shut the door when I was in the crowded FX. Looking at buying a Vision W...
